ich bin nun seit genau einem Jahr in den USA!!! Wow – wie die Zeit vergeht!!!

I have been in the United States for exactly one year! Wow – time is flying!
Das ist doch wieder mal ein guter Anlass einen neuen Blog zu veroeffentlichen, denn es ist wieder Einiges passiert.

I think that’s a good reason to publish a new blog because much has happened.

Zuerst moechte ich natuerlich ueber den Baufortschritt in unserem Haus berichten. Es sind viele kleine und auch grosse Projekte abgeschlossen worden. So wurden beispielsweise neue Hurricane-sichere Fenster eingebaut. Neben dem Sicherheitsaspekt im Falle eines Hurricanes, haben diese Fenster aber auch einen deutlichen Beitrag zur Verschoenerung unseres Hause beigetragen. So konnten wir die alten Hurrican-Shutter abbauen, was dazu fuehrt, dass wir mehr Sonnenlicht ins Haus bekommen. Ausserdem sind die Fenster deutlich energie-effizienter, sodass sich auch unsere Energieabrechnung reduziert. Den Einbau der Fenster haben wir dann auch gleich genutzt, um die Innenansicht der Fensteroeffnungen zu verschoenern. Neue Hozrahmen und Fensterdekoration machen das Ganze gleich viel wohnlicher. Weiterhin installierte ich im Grossteil des Hause neue Crown-Moldings (Stuckoverkleidungen, wo die Waende und die Decken zusammen kommen) und neue Tuerrahmen und ueberholte das Einbauregal in der “Travelers-Lounge”. Bevor wir dann das Highlight dieses Modernisierungsabschnittes begannen, renovierte ich noch unser Linen-Closet (Abstellkammer) mit neuen Einbauregalen und neuer Tuer. Ausserdem vollendete ich die Fliesenarbeiten, die unser Vorbesitzer in der Abstellkammer netterweise “offengelassen” hatte.

Of course I want to talk about the construction in our house first. I finished many small projects and big ones too. For example, we have hurricane-proof windows. Besides for the safety in case of a hurricane, the windows also look really good. We could remove the old awnings and have much more sunlight in the house. The windows are more energy efficient as well so we can reduce our energy bill. We also improved the inside of the windows with new trim and window treatments that make it look so much nicer. After that, I installed crown molding and new door trim in the major rooms in the house. I also refurbished the built-in shelf in the Travelers Lounge. Before we started the main renovation project I remodeled our linen closet by installing new shelves and a new door. I also finished the tile job our previous owner left for us.

Kommen wir zum eigentlichen Hightlight – das Gaestebadezimmer. Dieses Badezimmer war zwar vollkommen funktionstuechtig, war aber optisch sehr unattraktiv. Ersten wurde es “geschmackvoll” im Stil der Siebzieger eingerichtet, wobei alles im “eleganten” Pink gehalten wurde. Ja alles – die Toilette, das Waschbecken, die Badewanne und selbstverstaendlich die Boden- und Wandfliesen!!! Das zweite Problem war die zentrale Lage im Haus. Das Bad hatte keine Fenster und so fuehlte man sich wie in einer Hoehle und musste staendig (tagsueber und nachts) das Licht einschalten. So beschlossen wir eine Generalueberholung. Wir planten den Einbau eines Dachfensters, welches sowohl Licht, als auch Frischluft ins Bad bringen sollte. Leider mussten wir schon bald feststellen, dass sich diese Wuensche mit den oertlichen Bauvorschriften nicht umsetzen liessen. Aufgrund der Hurricane-Gefahr ist der Einbau von Dachfenstern, die sich oeffnen lassen, in Florida nicht moeglich. So mussten wir also etwas umplanen und entschieden uns fuer ein festinstalliertes Fenster in Kombination mit einem Feuchtigkeitssensor-gesteuerten Abluft-Ventilator. Wir fanden dann auch eine Firma, die den Einbau mit den notwendigen Baugenehmigungen vornehmen konnte. Alles lief also soweit nach Plan, bis der Bauinspektor, der das Dachfenster begutachten sollte, unser demontiertes Badezimmer sah….

Let’s talk about the highlight – the guest bathroom. The bathroom was in working condition, but didn’t look good. First, it was built in the seventies and they must have loved pink. Everything was pink: the toilet, the sink, the bathtub and of course the tiles! The second problem was the location – in the middle of the house. The room had no windows and so it felt like being in a cave – during the day as well. That’s why we planned a complete renovation. We thought about a skylight which could bring in daylight and fresh air as well. But after a lot of research we realized that it wouldn’t be possible. The reason is due to the strict building codes in Florida for hurricane protection. So we changed our plans and decided to get a fixed skylight and a sensor activated ceiling fan. We found a company who would install the skylight and get all the required permits. Everything went well until the day the building inspector (who should inspect the skylight) saw our bathroom construction…

Eigentlich hatten wir geplant diese ohne offizielle Genehmigung zu renovieren. Nun verlangte aber der Inspektor Genehmigungen fuer die Elektrik, die Klempnerarbeiten, die Trockenwandarbeiten usw. Also machten wir uns an die Arbeit. Ich zeichnete Plaene, machte Ausfuehrungen ueber die geplanten Veraenderungen und erstellte Kostenuebersichten. Dann brachten wir alles zum Bauamt. Nachdem dieses alle Plaene gesichtet hatte, standen 4 verschiedene Inspektionen an, die zum Glueck alle erfolgreich verliefen. Nun konnte es endlich losgehen. Ich installierte neue Wasser- und Abwasserleitungen, verlegte die Elektrik zum Teil neu und erneuerte einen Teil der Klimaanlagenbelueftung fuer unser Schlafzimmer. Dann ging es endlich weiter. Ich installierte die neue Badewanne, worauf die naechste Inspektion folgte, die wiederum erfolgreich verlief. Dann brachte ich neue Trockenbauwaende an, die ebenfalls erfolgreich vom Bauamt inspiziert wurden. Die folgenden Arbeiten konnte ich dann, bis zur finalen Abnahme, ohne weitere Inspektionen erledigen: Spachteln und verschleifen der Decke und Waende, Streichen, Boden- und Wandfliesen, Installation der neuen Toilette, Anbringen einer neuen Tuer, neuer Schalter, Steckdoesen, Licht,…

Originally, we had planned to do this renovation without a permit. But now the inspector asked for electrical permits, plumbing permits, structural permits and so on. So we had to do some homework. I drew the plans, wrote descriptions of the changes and created financial estimates. Then we brought everything to the City of Hollywood building department. After reviewing the papers, we had to absolve 4 different inspections. Because nothing was wrong, we could start with the renovation. I installed new water pipes, modified the electricity and updated an air condition duct for our bedroom. In the next step, I installed the new bathtub and after that I had to call for an inspection. Everything was OK so I could put in the new drywall and cement board. The next inspection followed. After the OK from the building inspector I finally could do the following steps without further inspections: plastering and sanding of the walls and the ceiling, painting, tiling, attaching of the new toilet, installing a new door, new switches, outlets, light fixtures….

Nach 3 finalen Inspektionen war es dann geschafft. Das Gaestebad war fertig. Alles in Allem war es wieder mal eine sehr arbeitsintensive aber auch erfolgreiche Renovierung. Wir sind jedenfalls sehr mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden. Doch seht selbst – die Bilder folgen ja…

After 3 more final inspections the project was finished. It was a lot of work, but it was worth it. We are happy how it turned out. But decide for yourself – the pictures will follow.

Aber selbstverstaendlich hat sich in den vergangenen Wochen und Monaten noch mehr getan, als nur im Haus. So koennen wir heute stolz verkuenden, dass Lori Ihre “Ausbildung” erfolgreich abgeschlossen hat und nun als “amtlich zertifizierte Allgemeinmedizinerin” in einer Arztpraxis in Pembroke Pines Vollzeit arbeitet!!! Ihren Abschluss haben wir zuerst in Miami mit ihrem Vater und spaeter zu zweit in einem polynesischen Restaurant gebuehrlich gefeiert…

Of course other things happened in the last few months. So we can proudly announce that Lori finished her residency and passed her board certification. She signed a full time contract and works as a Family Medicine Doctor in an office in Pembroke Pines. The official graduation was in Miami where we went with her dad. Later, Lori and I went to a polynesian restaurant to celebrate this important step in her career…

Was ist noch so passiert? Eigentlich nichts Spektakulaeres. Wir geniessen unseren Alltag hier in Florida. So besuchten wir beispielsweise unser Lieblingsweingut (Schneblys) mit Freunden und schauten uns das Coral Castle an. Ausserdem feierten wir den 4. Juli zuenftig bei Freunden mit Grillfeier und jeder Menge Feuerwerk.

What else happened? Nothing spectacular. We just enjoyed our life in Florida. For example, we went with friends to our favorite winery (Schneblys) and visited the Coral Castle. We also celebrated Independence Day at a friends’ house with a BBQ and a lot of fireworks.

Und ach ja, das war ja noch die Fussball-WM. Nachdem Lori und ich die Vorrundenspiele nur zu Hause im Fernsehen gesehen hatten, beschlossen wir die weiteren Spiele in passendem Ambiente zu geniessen. Also fuhren wir nach Miami ins Bierhaus “Fritz & Franz” und zelebrierten das Deutsche Team mit jeder Menge deutscher Fans, gutem deutschen Bier und leckerer Bratwurst. Hier sahen wir die Spiele gegen England (4:1) und Argentinien (4:0). Leider reichte es ja dann nicht fuers Finale. Aber Deutschland schaffte es ja wenigstens auf den dritten Platz!!!

And not to forget, there was the soccer world cup. After Lori and I watched the first games on TV at home we decided to watch the following matches in a better atmosphere. So we drove down to the Bierhaus “Fritz & Franz” in Miami and celebrated the German soccer team with many other German fans, lots of beer and yummy fried sausages. There we watched the games against England (4:1) and Argentina (4:0). It’s a shame but they didn’t made it to the finals. But Germany won third place!!!

willkommen zum dritten Teil meines April-Blogs.

Welcome to the third part of my April blog.

Nach all den Hausumbauarbeiten und unserer Utah-Reise besuchten uns meine Eltern im neuen Haus. Fuer sie war es ausserdem der erste Besuch in den USA!!!

After all the house projects and our trip to Utah we got visitors – my parents. They visited the US for the first time!!!

Puenktlich zu Lori’s Geburtstag kamen sie hier an. Hierzu brachten sie jede Menge Geschenke und verbrachten diesen Tag relaxt am Strand von Hollywood. Zum Abendessen fuhren wir zu Benihana – einem sehr unterhaltsamen und leckeren Restaurant.

They arrived here right on time for Lori’s Birthday and brought a lot of gifts. We spent Lori’s Birthday at Hollywood beach. For dinner we went to Benihanas – a really entertaining restaurant with yummy food.

Am naechsten Tag ging es dann in die Redlands, suedlich von Miami. Dort durfte neben dem obligatorischen Besuch der Schnebly’s Winery und einem leckerem mexikanischen Lunch selbstverstaendlich ein Key-Lime-Shake vom “Robert-is-here”-Fruitstand nicht fehlen.

The following day we drove to the Redlands, south of Miami. There we had an obligatory wine tasting at Schnebly’s winery and enjoyed a very good Mexican lunch. Of course we had to bring my parents to “Robert-is-here” fruit stand to try a famous key lime shake.

Der darauffolgende Tag stand ganz im Sinne von Lori’s Geburtstagsparty. Wir luden dazu jede Menge Freunde und Bekannte zu einem BBQ ein. Dies war auch die erste Gelegenheit fuer meine Eltern, Lori’s Vater und seine Frau kennenzulernen.

The day after was Lori’s Birthday party. We invited a bunch of friends for a BBQ. This was also the first opportunity for my parents to meet Lori’s dad and his wife.

Die naechsten Tage verbrachten wir mit diversen Einkaufstouren (Sawgrass-Mills-Mall), Spaziergaengen durch unsere Nachbarschaft und den nahegelegenen Hollandpark und Erkundungstouren der lokalen Schrottplaetze (speziell fuer Joshi!!!), bevor es zum naechsten Highlight ging.

The next few days we went shopping (Sawgrass Mills Mall) and went for some walks through our neighborhood and Holland Park. Joshi and I also went to a local junkyard to get some “souvenirs” for his garage, before we headed towards our next highlight.

Hierzu brachten wir meine Eltern mitten in die Everglades – zur Billie-Swamp-Safarie im Reservat der Seminol-Indianer. Dort machten wir eine Airboattour und gingen auf Nacht-Buggy-Tour. Hier fang unser Guide vor unseren Augen einen Alligator mit blossen Haenden!!! Die Nacht verbrachten wir dann in Chikees – das sind Indianer-Huetten mit Strohdaechern – allerdings ohne Wasser oder Strom. Es war ein vollkommen neues Gefuehl so mitten in den Everglades – fernab jeglicher Zivilisation – zu naechtigen. Am naechsten Morgen besuchten wir das oertliche Museum und gingen noch einmal auf Safarie im “Schlamm-Buggy”.

We brought my parents to the middle of the Everglades – to Billie Swamp Safari in the Seminole reservation. There we did an airboat ride and went to a night swamp tour. Our guide caught an alligator with his hands right in front of us!!! We stayed the night there in Chikees (thatched roof dwellings of the Seminoles without water or electricity). It was a completely new feeling to sleep in the middle of the Everglades far away from civilization. The next morning we visited the local museum and went on a day safari.

Da wir uns nun schon auf halber Strecke Richtung Florida’s Westkueste befanden, entschlossen wir uns fuer einen Abstecher nach Marco Island. Dort verbrachten wir den Nachmittag am Strand und genossen den Sonnenuntergang, bevor es dann wieder nach Hause ging.

Because we were already halfway toward the west coast of Florida we decided to go to Marco Island. There we spent the afternoon at the beach and watched the sunset before we headed back home.

Nach einer kurze Ruhepause folgte dann schon das naechste Abendteuer. Wir machten eine Kreuzfahrt zu den Bahamas. In Nassau angekommen machten wir eine Stadtrundfahrt, besuchten das weltberuehmte Hotel Atlantis und stoppten noch im lokalen Zoo, wo wir Loris (in diesem Fall die bunten PapageienJ ) fuettern und die Flamingo-Parade bestaunen konnten. Von Nassau fuhr unser Schiff dann weiter zu einer Privatinsel (Great Stirrup Cay) der Kreuzfahrtgesellschaft. Dort verbrachten wir einen relaxtem Tag am Strand. Wieder an Board und auf dem Rueckweg nach Miami, genossen wir dann noch den Sonnenuntergang auf See.

After a short break we were ready for the next adventure. We went on a cruise to the Bahamas. In Nassau, we did a sightseeing tour through the city, visited the famous Atlantis Hotel and went to the local zoo. There we could hand feed Lories (in this case the colorful parrots J ) and watch the marching flamingos. From Nassau our ship went to a private island (Great Stirrup Cay) of the cruise line. We relaxed the whole day at the beach and headed back to Miami in the evening. On our way, we watched a beautiful sunset at sea.

Miami schauten wir uns dann den kommenden Tag genauer an. Wir besichtigten Viscaya, Bayside mit einer unterhaltsamen Hafentour, spazierten durch den bekannten Art-Deco-District in Miami Beach und schlenderten am Ocean Drice und am Strand entlang.Da meine Eltern ja auf Urlaub hier waren, stand dann die naechten Tage nur Hollywood Beach auf dem Programm.

The following day we went down to see Miami. We visited Viscaya, went to Bayside and did a harbor cruise. We also drove to Miami Beach and walked through the famous Art Deco District, along Ocean Drive and the beach. Because my parents were here to relax they just went to Hollywood Beach the next few days.

Doch ein Highlight fehlte noch – die Florida Keys. Wir fuhren mit meinen Eltern ueber den Overseas-Highway durch die Keys nach Key West und verbrachten dort eine Nacht. Wir sahen den Sonnenuntergang von der Dachterasse des “La Concha”-Hotels, besuchten die lebhafte Duval-Street und machten Trolley-Tour. Mit diesen Eindruecken endete dann auch schon leider wieder der Besuch. Wir hatten alle eine super Zeit…

But there was still one highlight left – the Florida Keys. We took the Overseas Highway down to Key West where we stayed for one night. We watched the sunset from the roof top of the “La Concha” Hotel, saw the busy Duval Street and did a trolley tour. With these impressions the vacation of my parents was over. We all had an awesome time…

im zweiten Teil meiner Blog-Reihe im April moechte ich Euch ein paar Eindruecke von unserem Las Vegas/Utah-Trip geben.

In the second April blog I want to give you some impressions of our Las Vegas/Utah trip.

Im Maerz musste Lori an einer Konferenz in Las Vegas teilnehmen. Obwohl es teilweise noch Winter in Utah war, entschieden wir uns diesen Las Vegas-Aufhenthalt mit einer Tour durch Utah’s Nationalpark zu verbinden. Und so fuhren wir nach einer kurzen Las Vegas-Sightseeing-Tour Richtung Utah.

In March, Lori had to go to a conference in Las Vegas. Although it was still winter in Utah we decided to combine this Las Vegas trip with a Utah national park visit. After a short time in Las Vegas we headed towards Utah.

Unser erster Stop war der Zion Nationalpark. Wir befuhren den Zion Canyon Scenic -Drive durch den Park und stoppten an Punkten wie zum Beispiel den “Court of the Patriarchs”. Von dort fuhren wir dann weiter Richtung Bryce Canyon.

Our first destination was the Zion National Park. We took the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive through the park and stopped at points of interest – for example “Court of the Patriarchs”. From there we left to go to Bryce Canyon.

Da im Bryce Canyon noch tiefer Winter herrschte und alle Wanderwege verschneit waren, erkundeten wir den Nationalpark ueber die zahlreichen Aussichtspunkte. Die schneebedeckten Felsformationen gaben uns einen komplett anderen Eindruck, als man von Bilder kannte. Die Nacht verbrachten wir dann im Ruby’s Inn – einem der wenigen Hotels, die in der Winterzeit geoeffnet hatten. Am naechsten Morgen “genossen” wir bei 21 Grad Fahrenheit (das sind -6 Grad Celsius) den Sonnenaufgang bevor wir uns auf den Weg zum Capitol Reef Nationalpark machten.

Because Bryce Canyon was still covered with loads of snow we discovered the park through the view points. The snow covered rock formations looked totally different than we had known from pictures. We spent the night at Ruby’s Inn – one of only few hotels which are open during the winter time. The next morning we “enjoyed” the sunrise at 21 degrees Fahrenheit (that is minus 6 degrees Celsius) before we headed towards Capitol Reef National Park.

Dort stoppten wir am Besucherzentrum und bekamen in einem kurzen Film einen Ueberblick ueber den Park selbst und das Leben dort. Auf unserem weiteren Weg hielten wir an zahlreichen Aussichtspunkten und bestaunten die traumhafte Landschaft und auch alte Felsmalereien.

We took a break at the visitor center and got information about the park and the life of the people who lived there. On the way through the park we stopped at scenic view points and enjoyed the beautiful landscape and ancient rock art.

Von hieraus gings dann weiter Richtung Moab – eine der groesseren Staedte in Sued-Utah in der Naehe des Arches Nationalparks. Dieser sollte aber noch nicht unser naechstes Ziel sein.

Then we drove towards Moab – one of the bigger cities in southern Utah close to the Arches National Park. But the Arches National Park wasn’t our next destination.

Der Canyonlands Nationalpark stand erst einmal auf dem Programm. Aufgrund der grossen Entfernung zwischen den zwei Haupteilen des Park entschieden wir uns nur fuer die Erkundung des Nordteiles – Island of the Sky. Wir besuchten alle Aussichtspunkte und wurden mit allerlei Wetterkapriolen bedacht. Es war sehr kalt, windig und wir gerieten in Schneetreiben. Unseren Lieblingspunkt im Park – Mesa Arch – besuchten wir am darauffolgenden Tag noch einmal zum Sonnenaufgang.

The Canyonlands National Park was our next goal. Because of the long distance between the two main parts of the park we decided only to explore the northern part – the Island of Sky. While visiting all the view points we got to experience all kinds of weather. It was cold, very windy and it was snowing. Our favorite sight in the park was Mesa Arch. This part we visited again for sunrise the following day.

Doch weiter gings. Nach einem kleinen Stadtrundgang durch Moab fuhren wir zum nahegelegenem Arches Nationalpark. An diesem Tag hatten wir Glueck mit dem Wetter, sodass wir einige Wandertouren unternehmen konnten. So kam es, dass wir fast alle “Boegen” im Park besichtigen konnten. Die anstrengenste Tour zum Delicate Arch war auch gleichzeitig die Beste. Der Anblick des Wahrzeichens von Utah war jede Meile des anstrengenden Weges wert. Den Sonnenuntergang erlebten wir dann am Balanced Rock – einer Felsformation, die aussieht als wuerde sie gleich zusammenfallen. Abschliessend kann man sagen, dass der Arches Nationalpark unser Favorit dieser Tour war. Aber unsere Reise war noch nicht zu Ende…

But there was no time to rest. After a short walk through Moab we drove to Arches National Park. This time we had luck with the weather and so we decided to do some hiking. We almost saw all the arches in the park. The most difficult hike was Delicate Arch and it was the best of the day. To see the Delicate Arch (the emblem of Utah) was worth it to hike the long way. Later we saw the sunset at Balanced Rock – a rock formation that looks like it will collapse soon! Looking back we can say that Arches National Park was our favorite of this trip. But our journey wasn’t finished yet…

Auf unserem langen Weg zurueck nach Las Vegas stoppten wir noch im Sego Canyon und bestaunten jede Menge uralter Felsmalereien. Auf dem weiteren Weg besuchten wir dann noch den Fremont Idian State Park mit seinen zahlreichen in Fels geritzten Bildern. Es war super interessant und lehrreich!!!

On our LONG way back to Las Vegas we stopped at Sego Canyon and saw a lot of ancient rock art. Later we visited the Fremont Indian State Park as well. There we saw many rock carvings of the Fremont Indians. It was very interesting and we learned a lot!!!

Bevor wir dann endgueltig nach Las Vegas zurueckkehrten, machten wir noch einen kurzen Abstecher zum Hoover Damm. Ein wirklich beeindruckendes Bauwerk!!!

Before we got back to Las Vegas we took a short detour to the Hoover Dam – a very impressive structure!!!
